Krystina Balcaen, CPA, CA

Krystina joined the board in 2017. She obtained her accounting designation in 2006 and was recognized as a top writer by earning a place on the National Honour Roll. As an audit manager, her clients included a wide variety of industries such as financial institutions and automotive, but also a variety of not-for-profit organizations which she particularly enjoyed.  Currently, Krystina manages exam development for CPA Canada, where she is able to put a more direct focus on education and learning. She also spends a significant amount of her free time supporting a variety of charitable causes, including in her roles as board Chair of the CPA Manitoba Foundation and as a director of the Winnipeg Humane Society board, where she has also volunteered with the cats in their care for almost a decade. In addition to education and animals, Krystina is also passionate about assisting new immigrants to Canada (she and her family have directly assisted in the immigration and settlement of families from Ukraine) as well as improving mental health education and support for future generations.

Steve Williams

Past President
Steve joined the Board in 2014. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a Chartered Business Valuator with over 15 years of experience helping business and business owners find practical solutions to complex business and financial problems. Steve currently works as a Vice President of Corporate Development with People Corporation. His prior experience includes senior roles at both Grant Thornton and Deloitte working closely with local and national clients to help them through business growth, transition and transactions. A father and husband, Steve believes that strong, supportive families provide the foundations of a vibrant and successful community.

Kosta Vartsakis

Kosta joined the Board in 2019. He is a lawyer with the firm Thompson Dorfman Sweatman LLP and carries on a practice focused primarily in the areas of construction, insurance and commercial litigation. Kosta was born and raised in Winnipeg and loves all that the city has to offer. He attended the University of Manitoba for both his undergraduate and legal studies. Throughout law school, Kosta volunteered with the Legal Help Centre of Winnipeg, which provides legal services to lower income individuals and families. Since graduating, he has continued to work with the Legal Help Centre as a volunteer lawyer. Raised by a strong single mother, Kosta knows the importance of a supportive family environment and the role that it plays in both a person’s development as well as the greater community

Lorianne Kowaliszyn

Lorianne joined the Board in 2021. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 17 years of experience, and currently works as the Executive Director, Corporate Finance for Shared Health Inc. Lorianne’s past experiences include working at PricewaterhouseCoopers in both the Audit and Taxation departments, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in various Finance roles, and at Concordia Hospital as the Chief Administrative Officer. As a lifelong Winnipegger, she is passionate about her community and supporting healthy families in Manitoba. She is excited to contribute her skills and support the team at Family Dynamics.

Sharon Walters

Vice President
As a new Board member, Sharon brings to the table over 30 years of experience working in Social Services and Health Care Sectors. Currently working in the field of Community Development, Sharon supports communities by fostering partnerships and building neighbourhood capacity. Sharon also has experience in policy and program development; research and evaluation; grant development and managing employment and training projects. In her free time, Sharon travels and is involved in various dog training activities

Darlene Mager

Henry Stanley Haskins.Darlene is a Charted Professional in Human Resources (Candidate), and brings over 15 years in talent management, resource planning, strategic implementation, and human resources experience. Currently the Senior Consultant, Talent Acquisition for the Bank of Nova Scotia, she leverages the above for over 100 retail branches in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Western ON. As a single parent, Darlene has personal insight into the benefits of family support through experience using resources similar to those of Family Dynamics. She has prior experience volunteering on the board of her daughter’s daycare, served two years as President of the Music Association with a local junior high, and represented her daughter’s football team as Senior Manager. Joining the Board of Directors will allow Darlene to use her personal and professional experience to contribute to resources she believes has made her family as strong as it is today.

Markus Erkelenz

Markus is a Senior Solution Analyst with a major Insurance organization. He is a professional with 25 years of experience, including 18 years in business consulting in the public and private sectors including the Government of Manitoba, Crown Corporations, Pension Trusts, Information Technology, Manufacturing, Wholesale, Retail, and Indigenous Peoples Organizations.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with majors in Accounting and Finance. He is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC), Prince2 Practitioner, and is Prosci Change Management certified.
He was elected to the governing council (board) of the Institute of Certified Management Consultants of Manitoba in 2017 and has served as the Registrar of the Institute since 2018.
Markus enjoys sports in general with a big interest in Martial Arts. He is a black belt certified Kyokushin Karate practitioner and instructor who has conducted many community-based seminars.
As a new board member, he is looking forward to connecting and with Family Dynamics and being able to apply his own experiences when he first immigrated to Canada / Manitoba in 2003.

Jennifer Chen

Ms. Chen came to Canada in 2009 to study a Masters degree in Kinesiology at the University of Manitoba. Her research focused on physical activity and community health. After graduation she worked in local media for a period of time, including being an editor for the Manitoba Chinese Tribune magazine and an editor for the Uniter newspaper. In 2018, Ms. Chen was elected as School Trustee for the Winnipeg School Division. She sits on Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba, Immigration Partnership Winnipeg Immigrant Advisory Table, Ethnocultural Council of Manitoba, and Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Her passion is helping to create bridges between ethno-cultural communities in Manitoba, and advocating for underrepresented populations

Inga Wulff

Inga has more than twenty years’ experience with community mental health. She attended the University of Winnipeg and completed a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and Certification in Marriage and Family Therapy. She completed her Master of Social Work at the University of Manitoba, and a Certificate in Technical Communication from Red River College. Inga was raised in a Northern Manitoba community, and attended boarding school in Southern Manitoba. As a result, she understands the importance of cultural safety, and reconciliation. Since then Inga has worked in child care; with persons with disabilities; individuals from the school system; correction services, and addiction treatment. As a new member of the Family Dynamics board, she looks forward collaboratively to bring programs, partnerships and resources together to empower and strengthen families and communities

Soliana Teklehaimanot

Soliana is an owner of a downtown Café and has over 15 years working in social services with government, profit and nonprofit organizations. She has held several positions as a front line worker, in management, as antrainer, interpreter and consultant; specializing in newcomers and refugee issues.
Soliana also worked for Family Dynamics as a Case Coordinator working with high needs refugees. Soliana graduated from the University of Manitoba in Human Ecology. In her spare time, Soliana volunteers in her community, loves to cook and enjoy time with her family.

Ashlee Charach

Ashlee has a background in the social service sector and is a graduate of the International Development and Conflict Resolution Studies programs at the University of Winnipeg. She currently works as a Housing Clinician for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and supports underrepresented communities by addressing homelessness and facilitating partnerships among healthcare and community agencies for effective service coordination. Previous to this position, Ashlee worked in various non-profit organizations addressing issues related to housing and income security, employment and training, and child welfare. Ashlee is passionate about community development and capacity building initiatives and is currently pursuing further studies in Social Work through the University of Calgary. As a new Board Member at Family Dynamics, Ashlee hopes to lift up community voices, strengthen partnerships and work collaboratively to create sustainable change.
